Есть один известный анекдот, где говорится, что вероятность «встретить динозавра 50%: либо встретишь, либо нет». Это довольно забавно, что к данному анекдоту вполне подходит определение вероятности. Вероятность — это отношение числа интересующих нас событий к числу всех событий. Нас интересует одно событие, а возможно два. Из определения вероятность один к двум. Несмотря на это мы интуитивно понимаем, что что-то тут не так, даже не будучи профессорами математики: ведь мы ни разу не встречали динозавра. Многие скажут, что вероятность встретить динозавра 0% и отмахнутся от анекдота как от глупой шутки, не все, наверное, сходу не скажут что тут не так, не обладая навыками критического мышления. Перед тем как продолжить чтение сделайте паузу и попробуйте ответить на вопрос «что тут не так?»

Все дело в постановке задачи. Необходимо математически задать множество ситуаций, из которой станет ясно отношение числа ситуаций встречи с динозавром к общему числу ситуацией, для того, чтобы вычислить вероятность с точки зрения теории вероятностей. Введенные ограничения на это множество мы будем называть математической моделью.

Модель №1. Очень грубая

Предположим, что в мире есть k мест. Так же присутствует n динозавров. Предположим, что вы и динозавры можете находиться только в одном месте. Так же, для упрощения модели, предположим, что в одном месте может быть не больше одного динозавра.
Мы гарантированно получим модель, в которой находятся k мест из которых n занято динозаврами. Тогда мы можем уверенно сказать, что в случайно выбранном месте вы встретите динозавра с вероятностью n/k. Представленная модель показана на рисунке:

Это чуть лучше, чем в анекдоте: вы можете сказать, что если n=0, значит вероятность равна нулю, но поставить точку на этом месте это было бы не спортивно. Смотрите, сначала мы предположили, что в мире есть строгое число мест, на которые поделили сушу, как квартиру на комнаты, еще сказали, что в одном месте может быть только один динозавр.
Эта модель целиком построена на допущениях и не является адекватным отражением реальности. Попробуем исправить эту ситуацию.

Модель №2. Улучшенная.

Во первых было-бы не плохо представить землю не как k мест, а как плоскость. Учитывая, что радиус земли очень велик, это довольно точное приближение. И мы хотим чтобы люди и динозавры свободно могли бы передвигаться по этой плоскости. Как в этом случае подсчитать вероятность встречи? Смотрите, плоскость, можно представить как матрицу точек, из которых расстояние между любыми двумя близкими стремится к нулю. Тогда единица площади будет эквивалентом количества точек. Больше площадь — больше точек. В таком случае определение вероятности сохраняет силу. Все события — это вся площадь. Все интересующие нас события — это площадь, в пределах которой вы встретите динозавра.
Получается, вероятность встретить динозавра в любой случайно взятой точке есть отношение площади досягаемости динозавра к площади суши земли. Википедия подсказывает, что площадь суши земли 148 939 063,133 кв.км. А что такое площадь досягаемости динозавра? Мы знаем, что динозавры большие и рассчитываем, что можем их увидеть в пределах 5 км. невооруженным глазом, но с учетом того, что где-то в силу расположенных рядом объектов видимость дальше, где-то ближе, предположим, что мы можем увидеть динозавра в радиусе 0,5 км. Получаются такие расчеты:

Получается, что если отдельно взятый динозавр находится в любой точке земли и вы находитесь в любой точке земли, вероятность того, что вы встретите его примерно равна 0,00000052732852408%.

Модель №3. Больше людей.

Конечно, будучи в одиночестве вероятность найти единственного динозавра крайне мала. Но нас на земле 8 млрд. людей, и тогда вероятность найти любого случайного динозавра очень возрастает. Если предположить что люди случайно распределены на земле(что не является правдой), то вероятность того что хотя бы один человек встретит его будет такой:

Калькуляторы не могут точно оперировать с такими числами(нужно больше разрядов), но этого достаточно для того, чтобы понять, что с ростом населения встретить этого динозавра стремится к единице. То есть — существовал бы на земле хоть один динозавр — встреча с ним была бы достоверным событием.

Что можно улучшить

Модель не учитывает, что в одних местах людей проживает больше, чем в других, что некоторые места менее проходимы, что на Антарктиде вероятность встретить динозавра меньше, чем в тропиках, что возле береговой линии, в радиусе которой вы встретите динозавра меньше площадь, в которой можно находится. Радиус должен изменять свою величину в зависимости от места. Не учтены две протяженности, в которых можно использовать закон больших чисел — это количество динозавров и время. Чем больше динозавров и времени, тем более это достоверное(в случае существования динозавров) событие становится более достоверным. Более того нужно учитывать, что во времени пара событий не независимы друг от друга, в следствии чего для того чтобы построить более точную модель нужно построить дерево всех возможных состояний описывающих положение каждого из 8 миллиардов людей и каждого динозавра во времени, что является более сложной задачей, чем рассчитать все комбинации шахмат. Нужно так же предусмотреть что люди находятся на улице не в режиме 24/7 и приблизительно третья часть всего населения земли прямо сейчас спит и не может встречать динозавра. Что с течением времени население земли увеличивается.

Когда следует остановиться?

Дело в том, что такую сложную модель невозможно посчитать. Несмотря, на то что каждая деталь влияет на точность модели, наступает тот момент, когда модель описывает мир достаточно точно, а вносимые изменения ее слишком усложняют без лишней необходимости. Тогда приходится искать компромисс между сложностью и точностью описываемого явления. В данном случае модели №3 нам хватило для того, чтобы сделать вывод, что живых динозавров не существует. Однако стоит ли из этого делать все-таки 100% заявление о том, что их нет? Нууу, знаете, в неожиданный для вас момент может стать известным факт, который опровергнет ваше заявление.
